Use hardcore aggregate to repair your paths

Problems can often occur with paths due to poor construction or even accidental damage that will need repairing.

Cracks or sunken areas in the paths can be unsightly or an annoyance when the collect water. They become hazards that are in need of instant repair.

If the cause of damage is sunken foundations, excavate the area completely and add a well consolidated 50 mm layer of hardcore aggregate for pathways. What is Hoggin?

Hoggin is basically a mix of sand, gravel and clay that binds firmly when compacted.

It is perfect for creating a pathway as it allows water to drain through it, meaning it’ll never get waterlogged.

Its pleasant sandy colour means that it is aesthetically pleasing, as well as easy to maintain – only occasional weeding needed!

Wigan councillor plans to grit roads himself

A local Councillor in Wigan has pledged to grit roads himself after attaching a gritting machine to his snow plough.

Independent Group member Councillor Bob Brierley says he will “fill in” where the council haven’t got the resources or time to grit.

Brierley says he has no intention of replacing professional council highways maintenance staff, but he will be happy to supplement their duties.

He said: “I am sure that this will prove to be a really great asset in helping our residents of Hindley Green.”

However, he has been criticised by the branch secretary of Unison, Stuart Fenton, who said: “Unison does not believe that members of the public or councillors should be undermining public services by taking duties of qualified staff and putting in the hand of a novice.

“The council has a dedicated gritting team that has been trained for the requirements of the job.

“We also have specialist gritting equipment that complies with the legal requirements needed for gritting a public highway.”
